The Scandinavian Golfer's Guide to Marbella: Seasons, Tee Times and Dinner
Swedes and Norwegians have been wintering on the Costa del Sol for decades. Here is how to plan the golf, and the food that follows it.
Nueva Andalucía has a long-standing Scandinavian community — Swedish and Norwegian families have been playing golf here since the courses were built, and many return to the same villas year after year. If you are planning your first trip, or your twentieth, the rhythm of the season is worth knowing.
When to come
October to December and February to April are the sweet spots: daytime temperatures usually sit between 17 and 24°C, the courses are in good condition and the valley is quieter than in high summer. January can be brilliant and occasionally wet. July and August are hot enough that early tee times are essential — and that is when a late, shaded dinner outdoors is at its best.
Getting around
Málaga airport is roughly 50 minutes by car. Once in Nueva Andalucía almost everything — courses, supermarkets, Puerto Banús, the Saturday market — is within a ten-minute drive, so one hire car per group is usually enough.
Eating well without going home hungry
Spanish dinner service starts late and many kitchens pause in the afternoon. MAA serves continuously from 15:00 to 23:30, which suits Nordic habits far better — you can eat at 18:00 after a round if you want to, without waiting for the Spanish rush at 21:30.
Ordering if you don't know Indian food
Start mild and build. Butter Chicken, Korma and Chicken Tikka are the gentlest entry points; Tikka Masala and Bhuna are the natural next step. Ask the team for the heat level in the kitchen rather than assuming — they adjust it every night for Nordic guests, and it is easier to add chilli than to remove it.
